'U.S. is doing all what it can to restore democracy in Nepal'

Amid pro-democracy protests sweeping across Nepal defying curfew and government ban on public gatherings, a U.S. state department official has said that his government is doing everything to restore democracy in Nepal. In a brief telephonic conversation with this scribe, Sean McCormack, Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs who is also the spokesperson for the state department said, “We are utilizing all our diplomatic influence in Nepal.” He denied that the United States was underutilizing its leverage in Nepal. When asked if U.S. was contemplating other actions if diplomatic efforts failed, he declined to comment.

In recent months, the United States government has issued increasingly harsher statements urging the King to restore democracy. Richard Boucher, Assistant Secretary of State Department for South and Central Asia has described fourteen months of palace rule as a total failure… More soon….

This would have been the perfect season for Nepali pro-democracy protests, with the global agenda looking pretty favorable; except that now the fallout from Iran's newly acquired nuclear capabilities (I hope this pun remains incidental!) may push the whole thing off the stage. let's hope this is not true...
