Why did King Gyanendra Cancelled his UN Visit?

Vice Chairman of Nepali Council of Ministers with Annan's special envoy Brahimi. Foreign Minister Pandey will be attending the UNGA meeting instead of the King. Pandey told journalists in Doha that the King cancelled his trip to UNGA to "focus on restoring peace" in the country.

The royal palace hasn’t given any reason behind the king’s apparent change of mind, but it was pretty obvious last week that his visit to UN would have been a total fiasco in the light of the Maoists’ unilateral declaration of cease-fire. The Maoists stole the only remaining armor from the King’s arsenal as a justification for his usurpation of the power.

The monarch wasn’t hoping to gain any concession from the world leaders in the UN, instead his visit was aimed at convincing the Bush administration to support the royal regime, or at least give it the benefit of doubt in the wake of escalating Maoists offensive. The Monarch seems to have realized that after hurricane Katrina the administration’s attention has been diverted to the more pressing domestic politics. President Bush cancelled his plan to meet Chinese president for the same reason. Hence his plan to meet President Bush would have been an almost impossible task at this point of time.
